About the Program Support Center

The First Candle/SIDS Alliance Program Support Center provides programs and services for professionals working in the Health and Human Service arena.  The scope of our work involves providing guidance and materials for educational efforts on reducing the risk of infant death as well as providing compassionate grief support to those affected by an infant death.

It is our goal to ensure the availability of quality assured educational and training materials and promote collaboration and coalition building within the professional community.

2007 –2008 Program Goals:

Assist members of community- and/or minority-focused service organizations to provide infant mortality risk reduction education to minority, low-income, and other underserved populations.

Assist Sudden Infant Death Syndrome/Infant Death (SIDS/IID) programs to identify and provide technical assistance and support to bereavement service providers that are traditionally utilized within underserved communities.

Assist SIDS/ID programs to incorporate information and services relevant to pregnancy losses and infant deaths other than SIDS.

Educate the public, targeted audiences, health care professionals, and decision-makers on issues relevant to infant death through the creation of health messages, standards and policy statements.

To foster partnerships between the federal government, state/local SIDS/ID programs, First Candle/SIDS Alliance member organizations and organizations that have not traditionally been involved in infant health/mortality issues.

Under the guidance of a medical director, advisory committee and a highly-qualified, diverse staff, the PSC utilizes specialized subcommittees to accomplish its goals:

Developing and disseminating lists of recommended educational and bereavement materials

Training and supporting civic organization members to provide SIDS/ID risk reduction education

Maintaining existing SIDS/ID risk reduction messages and expanding messages beyond back sleeping and safe sleep environment

The PSC welcomes individuals and organizations involved in infant health/mortality arena to join us in this important effort.  For more information, please contact Kathleen Graham at 800.638.7437 or kathleen.graham@firstcandle.org.
